APNH offers status neutral prevention and care in a holistic, nonjudgmental, and sex-positive atmosphere. Everyone has a HIV status and knowing your own HIV status plays a major role in preventative care. Greater knowledge of how to reduce your risk will help allow you to make informed decisions and enjoy the things you like and make you the person you are. Our counseling uses a Harm Reduction model. Our Prevention Coordinators will work with you to reduce risk of new HIV and STI infections. This requires open and honest dialogue between you and the Coordinator. The goal is for you to reduce risk without sacrificing the things you like to do and the pleasure you receive. APNH is committed to hiring individuals who are reflective of the epidemic, not just in HIV care but in substance abuse, behavioral and emotional health and additional areas affecting Greater New Haven and the state of Connecticut as a whole.

APNH offers free and confidential HIV testing services at our offices at 1302 Chapel Street in New Haven. Appointments and walk-ins are available.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis better known as PrEP is a way to protect yourself from HIV! PrEP, when taken correctly is as effective or even more so than condom use. It is generally well tolerated with minimal and short-lived side effects. Your provider will monitor your uptake and use of PrEP to ensure you stay protected and healthy.

As part of our status neutral care model, APNH can help you access PrEP! APNH has partnered with online service provider heyMistr.com to provide PrEP services. This option works for many but if uninsured or insured by HUSKY, a referral to a local community partner will be required and APNH is able to make that connection for you. For more info or if you have a question, please CLICK HERE or contact us at 475.267.7631.

What is the difference between PrEP and nPEP? PrEP is a medication that is taken on an ongoing basis to prevent HIV. nPEP, or Nonoccupational Post Exposure Prophylaxis, is prescribed when a known potential exposure to HIV has taken place. To be effective, the medication must be started within 72 hours of exposure. The medication must be taken for a month for maximum protection against the virus. APNH can not provide a prescription for the medication but we can help you locate a provider to assist you.

APNH offers free condoms and lubricant in-office and by mail. There is typically a variety of condoms and we offer water-based and silicon-based lubricant.
